4000+ shoeboxes heading to Eastern Europe

Tuesday 08 November 2022

Children in Ukraine are among those who will receive a box of Christmas gifts from generous people in Guernsey this year.

The annual collection of shoeboxes filled with gifts, organised by Rotary Guernesiais, came to a close this past weekend.

This year, the total number of shoeboxes packed into cartons to be shipped to Europe via the UK was 4,134.

The organisers said it was "a great result thanks to the efforts of everyone involved and the wonderful generosity of islanders".

Rotary Guernesiais was accepting shoeboxes filled with gifts for disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe including Ukraine over the last couple of weeks.

Items included toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and other useful item of clothes for children of all different ages, as well as stationery and small toys.

The person donating the gifs could specify the age of the child it was intended for and fill their shoebox with gifts accordingly.

The donations were all collected at the Braye Lodge Hotel.

The organisers said: "These gifts and essentials of life make a difference to these children, living through difficult times, and bring a few smiles of Christmas happiness".

The gifts have now been loaded on to two containers by the Guernsey Fire Service for shipping free of charge to Poole this week by Channel Seaways.
