24 hour ultra challenge for charity

Saturday 15 September 2018

A group of running and fitness enthusiasts have come up with a fundraising event to challenge even the most hardy of athletes - a 24 hour track based 'ultra' taking place at Footes Lane this weekend.

They've said it's "another first" for Guernsey, and potentially for the Channel Islands.

Starting at 12:00 today, and ending midday tomorrow, it is a timed event where entrants will find out how far their feet can take them within a 24 hour window.

Both teams and individuals were able to enter, with prizes at stake including awards for different distances and speed covered.

Some of Guernsey's well known endurance runners are involved, including Stuart Mosely, Daz Carre and Michael Quittenden, who have all entered physically and mentally challenging races before.

Among their competitors will be corporate teams including Isabelle Vets and sponsors Next Generation IT.

The 24 hour ultra event will raise money for two charities, Bright Tights, and The Guernsey Friends of the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Entry fees were charged and sponsorship was being collected, with refreshments included for entrants, and available to buy on site throughout the 24 hours as well.

Out of the team entrants, the minimum requirement is for one team member to be on the track at all times during the 24 hour period.

The organisers said: "the format will be simple. Cover as much distance as you can or want to within a 24hour period. We will change the direction you run every 4 hours.

"Each entrant will have a timing chip, which makes it easier for us to keep track of your distance around the track!"
