A parade and church service to mark the 100th anniversary Homecoming of those who had served in one of the Armed Services during the First World War is being held today.
The date of their return was 21 May 1919 and so the anniversary is being celebrated on the nearest Sunday.
Many of those returning had been in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (RGLI), having served in it in the later stages of the war. Unfortunately after severe losses at the ‘Battle of the Lys’ in April 1918, it was effectively wiped out as a fighting unit and the men were allocated to other duties. A memorial to the RGLI was unveiled in the gardens opposite the Royal Court building in April 2018.
In 1919 there was a big Homecoming Parade through the streets of St Peter Port on the 29 May, led by 70 sailors. On this occasion the parade will form up and then be inspected by the Bailiff at Winston Churchill Avenue, Cambridge Park at 10:00.
The Seigneur of Sark, who is the President of the Sark branch of The Royal British Legion, will be part of the Inspection party. After the inspection the Parade will march to the Town Church to join the Sunday morning service at 11:00. The parade will be formed by the following groups:
Members of the public are welcome to watch the inspection and attend the commemorative service at the Town Church.
