Roadworks "embargoed" after mix-up

Plans to demolish a derelict building in the Lower Canichers have been halted by an embargo on all roadworks in the area until 2021.

However, an appeal has been launched by those who want to carry out the work.

Traffic & Highway Services had previously announced the road would close on Wednesday 12 June as the owners of a derelict building behind The Swan Inn had received planning permission to demolish the property and create a private car park. 

However complications have surfaced just before work was set to commence. 

‘Traffic & Highway Services can confirm there is currently an embargo on carrying out roadworks at Les Canichers until 2021," said a spokesman when asked why the road was still open. 

"However, this does not prevent the road being closed for other reasons, including major works to properties on the road.  Therefore the permission to close the road from [12 June] has been given and is still valid.

"THS understands the private firm that requested the closure would like to carry out some small-scale roadworks as part of the overall project.  For this to be done before the end of the embargo, an appeal has to be made to the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure justifying why there are exceptional reasons that this work could not be undertaken before the previous resurfacing works took place.  This appeal is being made, and will be heard later this month."
