An invention has been crowdfunded that is sure to make you feel like a character in a sci-fi movie: glasses that have the ability to block out screens.

IRL Glasses, founded by Ivan Cash, has surpassed its fundraising goal on Kickstarter for the incredible glasses, which can make some screens appear blacked-out.

The glasses are currently in beta mode, which means they are compatible with most TVs and some computers. The glasses do not yet work with smartphones or digital billboards however.

The company said: “Not too long ago, phones were attached to the wall, TVs weighed as much as refrigerators and computers rivalled minivans in size. Then everything changed. The world has seen an explosion of screens all vying for our attention, making it harder and harder to have uninterrupted experiences and genuine human connections.

“The design for IRL Glasses is unique and iconic, inspired by the 1988 cult classic film They Live, where a magical pair of glasses blocks ads.

“IRL Glasses block LCD and LED screens through horizontal polarised optics… By flattening and rotating the polarised lens 90 degrees, light emitted by LCD and LED screens is blocked, making it look like the TV or computer in front of you is off.”

The company behind IRL Glasses has smashed its fundraising target on Kickstarter, with over $91,000 (around £69,000) raised of its $25,000 (around (£19,000) goal.

The ad-blocking glasses are available for a discounted price of $49 (around £37) for crowdfunding backers.

Orders are estimated to be delivered by April 2019.
