The mysterious new creature which began to appear in Pokemon Go over the weekend is a mythical Pokemon called Meltan.
The news was revealed in a video released by the Pokemon Company on Tuesday, in which Professors Willow and Oak discuss the new arrival.
Meltan started to appear in the popular mobile game on Saturday, but trainers were unable to add it to their collection as it would transform into the shape-shifting Ditto upon being caught.
With no information about the creature, players took to naming it themselves, with Nutboi quickly emerging as the favoured choice.
Meltan is described as having a body “made mostly of liquid metal”. It “can use its liquid arms and legs to corrode metal and absorb it into its body” and “can generate electricity using the metal” as an energy source or to attack.
The new steel-type Pokemon is being trailed as a link between Pokemon Go and the upcoming Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee games which are being released for the Nintendo Switch in November.
