The update is in accordance with the Unicode Consortium’s latest emoji standard which was confirmed earlier this year.

The group is responsible for establishing the basic standard and design of emoji which will be made available across different devices and operating systems.

Firms such as Apple can then edit them to fit their own design desires – this is why emoji look slightly different on Apple, Samsung, Google and Microsoft devices.

Apple said it is already working with the Unicode Consortium on plans to add more disability-themed emoji to keyboards, adding that it hopes to have some included in time for the next collection, due to be released in 2019.
