Microsoft has pulled its latest Windows 10 update after some users reported that documents on their computers went missing after it was installed.
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which started rolling out globally from October 2, is no longer being sent out to devices and manual downloading has also been pulled from Microsoft’s website.
“We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809)* for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” the company wrote on its support page.
A number of users took to discussion sites, claiming that documents, pictures, music and videos could no longer be found following the update.
After spending the past 2 hours going through everything both Recuva and EaseUS found and besides a handful of plain-text files, my entire Documents directory is permanently and irrevocably gone. Pretty much all NTFS clusters are overwritten. Good job, @microsoft.

Some have tried to restore their previous version of Windows to get the files back, but with no success.
“I upgraded three devices yesterday (desktop PC, laptop, Surface) – on two the upgrade went perfectly, but on the desktop PC one profile had the documents and pictures folder deleted,” wrote one user on Reddit.
“Completely gone, nothing in Windows.old either. Restored to the previous Windows version, but files were still missing.”

Microsoft is urging any users who think their device has been affected to get in touch with their support team.
It is not clear when the company intends to resume the update.
