Instagram is toughening its approach against hateful posts with new artificial intelligence capable of detecting bullying in photos and their captions.

The Facebook-owned social network is using machine learning technology to spot signs of bullying across the platform, which should speed up the process for removing unkind content once its passed onto a human reviewer.

“This change will help us identify and remove significantly more bullying — and it’s a crucial next step since many people who experience or observe bullying don’t report it,” said Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s new boss, who took up the role following the departure of its co-founders in September.

“It will also help us protect our youngest community members since teens experience higher rates of bullying online than others.”

The move comes alongside new kindness camera effects on the photo sharing app in a bid to promote more positivity, as the UK prepares to mark Anti Bullying Week in November and the US carries out its National Bullying Prevention Month throughout October.

In May, the company started filtering out bullying comments intended to harass or upset people. The feature will now be rolled out further to any live videos.
