HTC has introduced a lite version of its U12 smartphone range in a bid to attract those looking to spend less on their next handset.

The HTC U12 Life takes on an alternative design compared with its premium counterparts, using a metal-like acrylic glass finish along the top and a matted texture on its lower section.

HTC has stuck to a 6in (15cm) display and dual camera offering on the back, but specs such as resolution and pixel count are slightly lower than other devices in the line-up, as the Taiwanese firm attempts to lure buyers with a mid-range £299 price tag.

The company has also continued to resist the urge to add an iPhone X-inspired notch to the top of its latest handset.

Android Oreo will run on the device alongside a Snapdragon 636 processor, although HTC has already confirmed that its most recent U12 and U11 handsets will eventually get the new Android Pie update at some point.

HTC is under increased pressure from other Eastern rivals, including Xiaomi which will soon be stocked by Three across its European stores, and Huawei, which recently took Apple’s place as the second-largest smartphone seller.

The HTC U12 Life will be available in a choice of two colours, Moonlight Blue or Twilight Purple, from late September.
