British smart home maker Hive is adding an outdoor motion detecting security camera to its line of connected products.

The Hive View Outdoor follows the same cube form as its indoor variant which launched at the beginning of the year, allowing Hive users to monitor the outside of their home for the first time.

Features remain very much akin to the indoor View as well, providing access to a live HD stream of footage, alongside notifications and recordings of any activity, and automatic night vision.

The most obvious difference is that the View Outdoor is weatherproof and comes with an anti-theft mechanism.

Users can set the motion sensor to only alert you when a person is detected, so that other moving objects like passing cars don’t flood you with unnecessary notifications.

Alternatively, you can set adjustable activity zones, so that motion detection is only triggered for certain parts of what the camera sees, such as your doorstep.

Bundled with Hive’s existing smart home products, the View Outdoor can be used to activate other devices, such as switching the lights on when motion is detected at a certain time.

Customers can install the View Outdoor themselves or purchase a professional installation by a British Gas engineer or certified professional.

Hive, a subsidiary of British Gas owner Centrica, recently announced that it had passed the one million customer mark.

The company’s selection of internet connected devices, including a thermostat, lights and smart plugs, make it one of the largest connected home providers in the UK.

Hive View Outdoor is available to pre-order ahead of its December 10 release, from £179.
