Now in its 8th year and launched today, Jersey Water is offering a Bursary Award towards the cost of studies and providing paid work experience during holiday periods to one successful applicant.

The bursary scheme started in 2009, in recognition of the achievements of the Company under the chairmanship of David Norman from 1996 to 2009. The aim then as it is now is to provide support both financially and with work experience to be made available to a local student undertaking a first undergraduate degree in any of the following areas:

· Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical)

· Water resources, management and conservation

· Environmental sciences

· Chemistry

Cheryl Kaye, HR Manager for Jersey Water commented “Our bursary scheme continues to be successful with supporting a local student each year during their university undergraduate degree with financial support and paid work experience during holiday time. Based on feedback from our previous students we continue to ensure that work experience provided is relevant and practical to the degree the student is studying. Each of our students to date via the scheme have gone on to develop successful careers in their chosen field or have continued their studies, as an example Lauren McCarthy, a previous Bursary Award recipient graduated from Bristol University with a Master’s in Chemistry.

Reflecting on her bursary experience at Jersey Water, Lauren commented “Throughout my time working in the Jersey Water laboratory, I gained invaluable experience, which extended beyond practical skills. I gained an insight into the day-to-day running of an industrial lab by taking part in every step from sample collection, to chemical testing and analysis. I found my exposure to this environment particularly useful throughout my final year Master's project and I know I have built skills which I will carry through to my future career.

We look forward to receiving applications for this year’s scheme and working with the successful applicant.”
