Waitrose has pledged its support to local charity, the Guernsey Welfare Service, to aid families in need across the island.
The Guernsey Welfare Service will be holding a food bank collection at Waitrose Admiral Park and Rohais on Saturday 28 June. Customers will have the opportunity to buy extra grocery items from a suggested shopping list which will be distributed to people in need within the local community.
Ian Burdekin, branch manager of Waitrose, said: “We’re always looking for ways to extend our support to the local community, specifically the fantastic work that the Guernsey Welfare Service carries out through the food bank initiatives. We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers when we run these initiatives.”
The Guernsey Welfare Service, in partnership with other agencies, seeks to provide financial and practical support to those in Guernsey who are in need. It works with a variety of people who find themselves in financial need including single-parent families, pensioners, people with disabilities or long-term medical conditions and those on low incomes who may find themselves with unexpected expense that puts them in financial difficulty.
Sue Le Friec, one of the Welfare Workers at the Guernsey Welfare Service, said: “This collection day has come at a really good time for us as we are very low on almost all items in our foodbank store.
“So far this year we have helped over 200 different families, most more than once. Each week we see new clients seeking help from a wide variety of backgrounds and for different reasons. All are very appreciative of the support we offer and of those who donate items to the foodbank for us to pass on.”
The suggested grocery items for customers to buy are: pasta sauce, coffee, jam, cereal, sugar, bottles of cordial, tomato sauce, tinned meat and biscuits. The charity also provides help by offering vouchers for essential commodities such as food and fuel.
