The St John marine ambulance was deployed twice on Tuesday after requests from medical teams in Sark and Alderney
The first mission was for a patient from Alderney who required transfer to Guernsey. The Flying Christine left St Peter Port at just before midday and arrived at Braye Harbour around an hour later. The crew received a handover from the doctor in Alderney before the patient was transferred onto the Flying Christine III for ongoing treatment by paramedics during the return journey. Once back in Guernsey the patient was then conveyed to hospital by waiting road ambulance.
During the afternoon the Flying Christine was sent to Sark following a request from the island’s doctor for two patients requiring further assessment and treatment at the Emergency Department in Guernsey. The marine ambulance left St Peter Port at around half past three, arriving in Sark less than half an hour later. The two patients were cared for by Emergency Ambulance Service clinicians on the voyage back to St Peter Port, before being taken onto the PEH shortly after 5pm.
In the past 24 hours the Emergency Ambulance Service has responded to sixteen calls and two members of off-duty staff were called back in to provide additional cover.
The Flying Christine III is provided by the St John Ambulance Guernsey charity and is funded through donations and sponsorship, as well as charges and subscriptions. The boat crews are made up of trained volunteers from the local marine community who give their time to respond on missions around the clock. The marine ambulance is operated by the Emergency Ambulance Service and is crewed by full-time professional clinicians. St John would like to thank the volunteers who responded to the two calls on Tuesday as well as the off-duty staff who returned to work to maintain resilience.
