Children are being invited to join the Gadgeteers at the Guille-Allès Library this summer, as the Summer Reading Challenge returns for 2022.

Last year saw record numbers of children take part in the free challenge to read six books during the summer holidays, with more than 1,700 signing up and more than 1,000 finishers. This year’s Challenge starts on Saturday 9 July, but parents can already register their children online at www.library.gg/gadgeteers and collect their packs from the Children’s Library on or after the start date.

This summer’s theme of ‘Gadgeteers’ follows six young friends who love hanging out at their community centre, and enjoy creating new inventions and working together to solve problems. Using their imagination and curiosity, the Gadgeteers will come up with innovative ways to get everything ready for the summer party.

The Challenge runs until September, with children collecting stickers and rewards along the way, and finishers receiving a medal and a voucher for a free swim at Beau Sejour. It’s most suitable for children aged 3-11, but all are welcome to take part.

Jodie Hearn, Head of Children and Young People’s Services: “We’re really looking forward to launching another Summer Reading Challenge. It’s always a brilliant way to keep children reading over the summer, and this year’s Gadgeteers theme is lots of fun. We were thrilled last year to see a record number of children taking part – we would love it if we can beat that record this time!”

As part of the Summer Reading Challenge the Library is also teaming up with the charity Every Child Our Future, repeating a successful collaboration over the previous two summers. ECOF volunteers will be on hand at the Library and in various outreach settings including the Kindred Centre to provide a friendly face to meet and greet children, talk to them about the stories they’ve read over the holidays so far, and listen to them read.

Andrew Bichard, Manager of Every Child Our Future (ECOF): "We are once again delighted to partner with the Guille-Allès Library during the Summer Reading Challenge. We are extremely grateful to our wonderful volunteers who are looking forward to supporting children with their reading this summer.”

More information about the Summer Reading Challenge can be found at www.library.gg/gadgeteers or by calling the Children’s Library on 743635.
