On Wednesday 25th May Saffery Rotary Walk had their first Packing Night. Volunteers from both Saffery Champness and Rotary converged at the Guernsey Post headquarters at La Vrangue to prepare Welcome Pack envelopes, ready for dispatch to all of the walkers who have signed up for the Saffery Rotary Walk circumnavigation of Guernsey on Saturday 11 June.

Lisa Vizia, a director at Saffery Champness, says: “Packing night forms part of our support for the Saffery Rotary Walk, ensuring all the money raised by the walkers, and their kind sponsors, can be donated to the 17 local charities nominated by the organising committee this year.”

More than 10 volunteers went along to Guernsey Post after work to pack T-shirts, lanyards and literature into large Jiffy envelopes, ready to be posted out the next day to all those signed up to participate in the annual walking event. It can take between 3 or 4 hours, so it’s quite an undertaking.

Simon Milsted, the chair of the Saffery Rotary Walk’s organising committee says: “I’d like to thank Guernsey Post for their invaluable support of the walk. By providing the space to allow the packers to work, plus the much appreciated tea and biscuits, it makes what is quite a logistical challenge much more straightforward. And as Lisa says, it enables us to plough all of the sponsorship money raised into our 17 nominated local good causes.”

Dawn Gallienne, the head of corporate engagement at Guernsey Post says: “It’s a pleasure to continue to assist the Saffery Rotary Walk on Packing Night and we’ve been doing so now for a number of years. It’s impressive to watch the volunteers at work who are highly organised. They have check lists that enable them to work out the size of T-shirt requested by each walker and all the other items needed are added to the right Welcome Pack. We provide the space to do it in and some of our staff are there to give a little assistance if needed.”

The Saffery Rotary Walk is still accepting entries, people can choose to participate in the full walk as individuals, just do a part of the walk or join with friends as part of a relay team to make the 39 miles more manageable, or take part as a family group for a shorter distance. To sign up for what is a truly momentous local event, that is both a physical and mental challenge, and an opportunity to see the whole of Guernsey’s gorgeous coastline, go to safferyrotarywalk.org.gg
