Rotary Guernesiais has had confirmation from the District organisers of the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Appeal that the annual collection will be going ahead this autumn from Saturday 31st October to Sunday 8th November.

The local organiser Hannah Laidlow is already receiving enquiries and phone calls from islanders as to whether this annual appeal was going ahead. Regular contributors are already busy knitting, collecting shoeboxes and contents.

Leaflets will be distributed later next month (August). Guernsey people have always been amazingly generous and last year we collected and sorted 4865 shoeboxes, by far the biggest contributor to the Wessex District region and Rotary Guernesiais holds the record of over 10% of shoeboxes sent, of UK total, coming from Guernsey.

This year we want to make an extra special effort and set ourselves a target of 5000, setting a new record.

The shoeboxes travel in containers to the UK thanks to Channel Seaways and onward by road accompanied by District Rotarians to distribute to needy youngsters in poorer parts of Europe including Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania.

Last year Hannah Laidlow was one of the Rotarians joining the District team in Romania for the distribution.
