The Children’s Library at the Guille-Allès library has a new avian resident thanks to BDO Guernsey’s Big Design Competition.

Children visiting the Library throughout December and January were invited to take part in the competition by colouring in a feather or a parrot, with all of the colourful feathers can now be found taking roost on a magnificent ‘Positivity Parrot’ installation.

Built by Denyse McGahy of Iris and Dora and the Children’s team at the Guille-Allès Library, the impressive large-scale sculpture is now proudly taking roost for public view among the branches of the ‘trees’ in the Children’s Library, colourfully adorned with the competition entries.

The competition was a tie in with the Library’s Boundless Curiosity exhibition, which ended on 21 January and was sponsored by BDO Guernsey. It was inspired by the showstopper artefact of the exhibition – John James Audubon’s Birds of America book.

The incredibly rare copy of the book housed in the Library featured detailed and life-sized illustrations of 435 different American bird species, providing plentiful inspiration for the Big Design Competition.

Richard Searle, Managing Director of BDO Guernsey, said: “We were thrilled to partner with the Library for the exhibition and wanted to find a way to include everyone in the community. Fostering the creativity in children is so important, and I was delighted to see that so many decided to take part.

“I’m sure that the children will enjoy seeing their artistic talents on display on this impressive installation. I want to congratulate the winners and all who took the time to enter the competition, and hope that our positivity parrot continues to bring joy to all who visit the Library”

More than 100 entries were counted in total, with the winners across the two age groups of 3-10 years and 11-14 years receiving a £50 voucher for Creasey’s and Just Games respectively.
