The Alliance Party Guernsey is holding a party conference to consult with Islanders on what changes they want to see moving forward.

An open invitation is being extended to all Islanders to attend the rally where they will be able to find out more about the party, express their views and discover how to become a Deputy.

The Alliance Party Guernsey is the first and, so far, only political party on the Island.

Party chairman Barry Weir said: ‘As a party, we are always keen to develop policy from the grassroots upwards and that means we need to canvass and understand the concerns of everyone.

‘We wanted to hold a conference to help garner as many views as possible from as many people as possible. Our policies are being built on the desires and needs of the people.

‘The conference will also give us the opportunity to explain how party politics will create transparency and make Deputies properly accountable. There will be clear policies developed in time for the election that the electorate will know our Deputies have a responsibility to push through once they’ve been elected.

‘During the conference we’ll also explain how people can become a Deputy, what is required and how we will support them.’

The party has more than a dozen candidates ready to stand and intends to partly use the conference to further boost numbers in time for the election.

Mr Weir says he believes the people of Guernsey are ready for the political change and that Island-wide voting means political parties are the best way to achieve it.

He said: ‘With Island-wide voting it would be impossible for the electorate to look at the policies of each individual candidate.

‘Party politics allows voters to clearly understand what they are voting for. There are no cliques and no hidden associations. Party politics is here, and it’s here to stay. That’s good for everyone.

‘We truly believe we will be able to able get enough candidates to be able to go on and win a majority in the election but that will ultimately be decided by the voters.’

The party conference will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at a venue to be announced.

Anyone who is interested in attending the event is asked to contact the party through their website www.apg.gg or email them at mail@apg.gg by August 3rd after which they will be sent registration details for a ticket.

Mr Weir added: ‘The first party political conference is an historic event for the Island. Although initially it will effectively be just one meeting eventually we hope it will become a much larger event which will become a cornerstone of helping to create clear policies for the party as we strive to create a better Guernsey for all.’
