Last Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday 22 August) 50 golfers took to the driving range at the Royal Guernsey Golf Club (RGGC) in an attempt to ‘Drive to St Andrews’ in aid of Home-Start Guernsey. 3,589 balls in total were driven over 100 yards throughout the challenge covering the 1,000km (621 miles) required to reach St Andrews in Scotland. In the process the golfers raised over £2,000 for the charity.

The first team to hit their quota of golf balls and win the inaugural challenge were the ‘Drink Drivers’, made up of Tom Bourgaize, Dave Radford, Dave Mosley, Martyn Howes and Tom Lowe. The team managed to complete the challenge in exactly two hours.

John Hibbs, director of strategy at PF+A who came up with the original idea, was also competing in the event: “It certainly was an endurance challenge for most of our teams however our winners were on top of their game finishing in two hours hitting almost 30 balls a minute which was amazing.”

Home-Start has been running in Guernsey for over six years and recruits parents as volunteers who visit families in their homes experiencing stressful times. The volunteers work with families by simply encouraging parent’s strengths and emotional well-being for the benefit of their children.

Jurat Margaret Spaargaren, chair of Home-Start Guernsey, said: “Our thanks go to John and the team from PF+A who came up with the idea and chose us as the charity to benefit from the event as well as to the RGGC who let us use their driving range for the event. It was a great day from start to finish. We have targeted this valuable fundraising money towards our running costs of training new volunteers.”

Home-Start is based at the Roseville Community Centre. For more information please visit: www.home-startguernsey.org.gg.
