Guernsey for Freedom (formerly Abolitionist Guernsey) is holding its second Fashion for Freedom event - returning by popular demand on Saturday 14th March, at Holy Trinity Church - doors opening at 6.30pm. All proceeds go to bringing slaves to freedom.

Join in celebrating the gift of freedom to people like Poonam (age 12). Until last year, she was a slave. She lived in a brick kiln with her parents, three brothers, sister molding and baking clay bricks. Working from daybreak to sunset under the watchful eye of the slaveholder’s overseers, Poonam was beaten if she didn’t work hard enough. Her family had just one meal a day. Today Poonam is going to school and learning to read and write. Her family eats three times a day – and Poonam dares to hope for her future. She wants to become a police officer one day so that she can stop ‘bad men forcing children to work in bad situations’. Come hear more about how the project has brought over a hundred people to freedom.

The event is an upcycling of last year’s clothing swap and sale and includes a supper being catered by Muse with La Hechet Farm ice cream for dessert. After supper Kay Davidson (www.askay.com) will present a sustainable fashion show full of tips on how to upcycle and after the show there will be an opportunity to buy items. Kay, who has long experience in the fashion industry, says: - ‘One of the most impactful things we can do to become more sustainable with our fashion choices is to become fully aware of what we buy and wear. Not in terms of the cost of an item but in terms of the social and environmental cost. This event is a showcase for sustainable fashion and how we can take action now, whilst still enjoying and celebrating expression through what we wear.’

Tables are available for parties of 6 or 8 people, with tickets sold at £35 per person. To reserve a table email oneislandonevillage@gmail.com.

Balcony seats are available at £5 per person for the fashion show only (doors opening at 7.45 p.m.)
