Emergency Department (ED) charges are set to increase from this Sunday for the first time since 2017.
The current tariffs were based on an inherited GP charging structure that was in place when the Committee for Health & Social Care took over the delivery of this Emergency Medicine model which is different to an appointment with one of the General Practice Surgeries.
The familiar ‘two tier’ structure remains in place with a charge levied depending on the time and day you attend, along with a consultation fee ranging from minor to critical, depending on the treatment that you need.
Children and young people (up to their 18th birthday) visiting the Emergency Department are only required to pay £25 regardless of the subsequent treatment required.
Those on income support will continue to have their attendance and consultation funded by Employment & Social Security and, therefore, will not need to pay for their consultation at the time. 2 The new ED charges with effect from 1 May 2022 are as follows:
