The biggest school quiz in the Channel Islands went virtual for the first time to encourage Year 6 students to have fun while learning at home during lockdown.

The De Putron Challenge is supported by the Ana Leaf Foundation and is an annual inter-school quiz for Year 6, 8 and post-16 students in Guernsey and Jersey.

As an addition to the annual event, a series of mini-quizzes for Year 6 students in Guernsey and Jersey were uploaded on the De Putron Challenge’s Facebook and Twitter pages and sent via email to schools. Five quizzes were published covering a range of topics including General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Words and Maths, Arts and Literature and Science and Geography.

The quizzes aimed to keep students entertained while at home and book vouchers were also given to the school with the most entries as a reward for taking part. The size of each schools’ year group was taken into consideration to ensure it was fair.

The schools that had the most entries were: Helvetia School (General Knowledge quiz), St Michael’s Preparatory School (Current Affairs quiz), Janvrin Primary School (Words and Maths quiz), St. Peter’s School (Arts and Literature quiz) and Melrose (Geography and Science quiz).

Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the De Putron Challenge, said: “Homeschooling children during lockdown must have been difficult for parents, schools and the students so we wanted to organise a series of quizzes to bring a bit of fun to their learning. We had a great response with over 1,000 entries and really positive feedback from the schools. Carrying out the quizzes virtually was great because it meant all Year 6 students across the Channel Islands could take part in the competition. Well done to everyone who entered. We hope the quizzes brought a bit of positivity and fun to the students during lockdown.”
