Following the discovery of a hole in the road in front of the Rockmount last week, Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services (ACLMS) will undertake improvement works to the seawall.
Investigative works were undertaken to identify the cause of the hole and excavations took place on both the landward and seaward sides of the seawall at Cobo. The seaward excavations identified a gap between the foot of the wall and the bedrock. This is an area of high importance and a repair will be undertaken along a 21m stretch of wall.
Work on site will commence on Tuesday 5th May and a one-way traffic system will be in place for the duration of the works, which are anticipated to take around 3 weeks.
Given the risk to the seawall and the utilities within the road, the works have been authorised as “essential works”. Correct social distancing and hygiene will be maintained by all personnel participating and efforts made to reduce movements of vehicles and personnel as far as is possible.
Investing in coastal defence continues to be a priority. Large scale repointing of the wall was due to take place from the slipway at the filter with Route de Carteret to the slipway at the Cobo Bay Kiosk this year. Work is now being undertaken in a manner that will allow for this emergency repair and the planned maintenance to be combined.
