What makes a small business tick? What issues do they face, and why do entrepreneurs choose to launch in Guernsey?

Express looks to answer these questions through a series of Q&As with local business. This week... Emy de la Mare, owner of Gwyneth & Grey.

Emy has a background in events, brand and marketing during a 20 year spell in Sydney, Australia. Locally, she spent time in brand and PR roles before embarking on her first retail venture in the Lower Pollet in 2023.

Why did you enter the retail industry?

Whilst travelling in my events capacity, I often thought that I would love to own a shop... but I never thought that it would become a reality. Retail has opened up a new passion I had never really considered until I was back on island, and this fantastic opportunity came up through a chance conversation.

I returned to Guernsey in 2017 and took over this business at the beginning of 2023.

What do you offer?

We stock clothing and shoes, along with selection of jewellery, handbags, accessories, candles and fragrance. Brands include Anya Hindmarch, Pascale Monvoisin, Ba&sh, Hartford, Velvet, Hartford, Lisa Yang and Dragon Diffusion.

What is your favourite part about running this business?

I’m a people person and I love the interaction with customers and meeting new people all the time. Every day is different and to have a business that offers me versatility, creativity and travel... what more can I ask for?

I also get to take my gorgeous dog, Lola to work!

What has been the most challenging part of running this business?

It was a steep learning curve last year. While I was supported by the previous owner, it sometimes felt daunting to take over and run such a beautiful store.

Now, nearly 18 months on, I think I’m finding my groove, bringing my touch to the shop and enjoying every element of the business.

What sets you apart?

I believe my unusual path into the retail industry has been advantageous and I see many synergies in both my previous career and where I am today.

Looking back on my time spent overseas, I can reflect on how invaluable it has been in helping me understand the importance of looking after people and creating the right atmosphere and experience for customers.

I am very passionate when it comes to detail and my background in events - a very detailed-orientated world - has been beneficial.

Finally, I’m blessed with my team who are so professional and friendly. I truly believe that we provide something different to an ordinary shopping trip, it’s more of a retail therapy experience, with a warm and honest service to our customers.

What goals do you have for this business?

I have some exciting plans for growth and always like to do something a little different, but for now I’m learning to walk before I run!

What's your favourite thing about living/working in Guernsey?

Living back on this side of the world with my family, and now the direct flights to Paris!

What’s your favourite way to unwind?

Quality time with family and friends, and if travel, sunshine, and a glass of champagne are involved, even better!
