The RAS Group will help provide "out of this world" lectures next month.

Thursday 26 July 2018

The RAS Group has partnered with darkskyisland.net to organise a series of lectures in Sark during the week of the Perseid Meteor shower and new moon.

Such a combination will not occur again until 2026 so Professor Ian Morison and author Robin Scagell will visit Sark to give lectures and lead stargazing, sharing their knowledge during the week of 7 - 15 August.

RAS partner, Alan Jackson, said: “I am unashamed in my love for Sark and the beauty of the Island. I spent seven years living within this fantastic community and there is truly a no more amazing a place to visit and live. However, day visitors miss out on something quite spectacular because the night skies over Sark are some of the darkest in the British Isles, as fantastic as anything you will see on the island during the day.

“The opportunity to encourage people to spend a few days on Sark during this cosmic event is honestly worth every penny. And after all, Kaye Char, also a RAS partner still lives on the island and is on hand working tirelessly to make it a week to remember.”

Kaye Char, partner at RAS said: “The partners are always passionate in their support for all things Sark and as an avid fan of meteor showers myself, promoting engagement in astronomy and the universe around us is something of a passion of mine. The Perseids outburst in 2016 was incredibly spectacular even with the moonlight interference, so the Perseids meteor shower this year is going to be a big deal, weather permitting! Spending my time to raise the profile of Sark as a Dark Sky Island and a base to see the meteor shower this year, sharing what is anticipated to be a jaw-dropping experience, is something I am proud to do.”
