New qualification for local physiotherapist

Friday 23 November 2018

Local physiotherapist Sophie Tyrrell has gained a post-graduate certificate studying continence physiotherapy from the University of Bradford and is one of the few physiotherapists qualified to treat pelvic health issues in Guernsey.

The masters-level professional accreditation provides an academic qualification for physiotherapists working in the speciality of pelvic health and continence care and it is the only programme of its kind in the UK enabling a full membership to the Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP) Group, a professional network affiliated to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Mrs Tyrrell, who works at Queens Road Medical Practice, has more than 10 years’ experience treating pelvic health issues.

“There are a number of misconceptions and a lack of understanding about pelvic floor dysfunction and other pelvic health issues – people often aren’t aware that physiotherapy can be used as a treatment,” she said.

Pelvic health issues affect a large number of women with 25% of over 20-year-olds, 40% of 40 and 50-year-olds and more than 50% of those over 60 (in the UK) suffering from a pelvic floor disorder. 10% of men also suffer from a pelvic floor disorder. Many people who are affected don’t talk about it, either from embarrassment or simply believing that it’s normal, so it’s important to remove the stigma and educate everyone on the issues and the treatment options available to them.

Physiotherapy may significantly improve the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction enabling patients to potentially avoid the possible side effects of medication or the risks associated with surgery.
