Sure has agreed to become the second major sponsor of the College of FE's International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) event, this year being held on Friday 21 June.
Sure joins Guernsey Electricity, main event sponsor for the past two years. INWED is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focuses attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry.
Events are held across the UK and beyond, as a way of building awareness amongst girls of the wide and varied career paths open to them in the engineering field. National sponsors of the campaign include Boeing, Royal Air Force and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
The College has held its own event for the past three years and in 2018, 250 girls from across the islands’ schools attended. The day gives them the opportunity to hear from senior females working in the engineering sector – this year including Sally-Ann David from Guernsey Electricity - and then to get involved with a number of hands-on activities ranging from operating a robotic arm and a logic controlchallenge to operating a smoothie bike and an augmented reality activity
They will also complete a quiz questionnaire, drawing on the knowledge they have gained during the day, with those with the highest score in with a chance of winning an iPad.
HR Director for Sure, Lucienne De La Mare, said: “This is a fantastic way of making young women more aware of the variety of careers available within the engineering sector. Women are still hugely unrepresented in this area and so giving them exposure to what’s out there before they start making choices on their next study options is crucial. Sure is delighted to support the event and we are looking forward to a fun and informative day.”
Programme leader for Engineering at the College, John Semenowicz added: “The College event has gone from strength to strength since we held the first one in 2016. We have new activities this year and I am sure that the girls will have a great day. We are extremely grateful to Sure and to Guernsey Electricity for their support and for their recognition of the importance of this campaign to increase the number of women working in the engineering field.”
The event will take place at the Les Ozouets Campus, starting at 09:30 and running through until 14:30 in the afternoon.
