The Deputy Principal (Pastoral) at The Ladies’ College has been nominated and accepted onto The Girls’ School Association ‘Global Mentoring Network for Aspiring Leaders’ programme.
Dr. Mitchell has been paired with Elizabeth Brooks, the Deputy Principal at St Vincent's College in Sydney, Australia. Together, they will be working on a project, whereby the schools will connect virtually to discuss their experiences and the impact of peer mentoring on the wellbeing of students.
Dr. Mitchell said: "Elizabeth and I set out to encourage student voice and student-led initiatives. We discovered that both our schools have a peer mentoring scheme called ‘Big Sister/ Little Sister’. Our project will use this initiative and aim to identify student perceptions of wellbeing, including inclusion and supportive relationships. In addition to this, we will give our senior student leaders the opportunity to engage in a process of inquiry exploring the current needs of their younger peers, and discuss and create interventions they believe will create a positive impact.
"We hope this collaboration will not only have a positive impact on the students who are at the beginning of their journey at The Ladies' College, but a chance for Sixth Formers to develop leadership and communication skills as well as play a part in nurturing a culture of inclusion and respect within the school environment."
Talking about her experience, Libby in Lower Sixth, said: "I’ve found being a big sister a lovely experience! It’s so important to make sure the Removes students (Year 7) have the support from both teachers and older students to be able to flourish within The Ladies’ College.
"I believe it has a very positive influence for them to have a role model that has been through exactly the same experience. It’s a great idea because it also benefits me as I’m given the opportunity to develop the skills of communication and leadership, so overall a very positive experience."
