Innovation award for wheelchair inventor

Thursday 02 September 2021

The company behind the world’s first carer-controlled, power-assisted wheelchair has won a local innovation award.

Five local businesses were shortlisted, presenting to a panel of judges last Wednesday: HedgeVeg.gg, Spike Productions, BB Blogs, Brintal Limited and Resolution IT.

The award, named in honour of Guernsey-man and entrepreneur Bill Green and awarded annually recognises achievement in the business community.

This year, the organisers were searching for an outstanding entrepreneurial innovation, and they found it in winners Brintal Limited with their ‘YPush’ wheelchair.

“We were absolutely blown away by the innovation and dedication that Brian and the team at Brintal Limited have put into creating, developing and manufacturing the revolutionary YPush wheelchair, the world’s first carer controlled, power assisted wheelchair,” said Nicki Harrison, President of the YBG.

“The journey they have been on so far is incredible and the future prospects for this product are undeniable, both for the company and the community.”

“The award this year showed once again how Guernsey businesses are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and innovating within their fields.

The high standards shown by the finalists are a real credit to the creative, entrepreneurial flair of our Island, said Lucy Kirby, Director of the Digital Greenhouse.

Panel Judge Martyn Dorey, from Dorey Financial Modelling, said of the winner: “Brintal’s outstanding healthcare vision is a showcase for Guernsey’s industrial design capabilities.”

Brintal Limited will be awarded the Bill Green trophy at the YBG Summer Ball on Saturday 4 September 2021.
