Industry expert becomes Director of Channel Islands Electricity Grid

Wednesday 17 November 2021

Guernsey Electricity’s Capital Programmes Commercial Manager, Tom Woodford, has been appointed as a Director of Channel Islands Electricity Grid Ltd. (CIEG).

The CIEG is responsible for overseeing the operation of the cable network which connects Guernsey and Jersey to France. It was established in 1998. The cable network enables the importation of over 93% of Guernsey’s electricity from renewable sources.

Mr Woodford has 36 years of experience of high-value contract and stakeholder management at Guernsey Electricity. Much of this experience has involved working for CIEG projects, gaining valuable knowledge of the operation and development of the grid.

In his new role as a Director of CIEG, Mr Woodford will join Guernsey Electricity's Chief Financial Officer, Karl Brouard, Chief Operations Officer, Sally-Ann David, and Chief Executive, Alan Bates, alongside Jersey Electricity’s directors.

He will oversee the operation, management and future development of the network.

CIEG is one of the top ten customers of EDF, the French electricity supplier. Mr Woodford's role will involve managing import contracts with both EDF and the French transmission network operator, RTE.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my operational knowledge of the complex subsea cable network to develop a long-term strategic approach assisting with the future management and development of the CIEG grid in a way that can benefit both Guernsey and Jersey," said Mr Woodford.

"Both islands have ambitious energy policies to tackle climate change and ensure a secure supply of energy and the CIEG cable network is an essential part in meeting the objectives.”

Guernsey Electricity continues to plan for the installation of a second cable from Guernsey directly to France to provide diversity to the island's supply and reduce exposure to fluctuations in the energy market.

The company says this will provide the foundation of future energy supply, reliable access to diverse and secure renewable electricity and enable the development of any future local renewable generation.
