When she was at school, Ellie Schreibke took on a Saturday job at Maison Demain. It was not long before she was offered an unexpected opportunity that she could not say no to…
As part of a series celebrating the value of Guernsey's small businesses, Express sits down with the owners of one of the many places that makes the island a unique place to live, work and shop to find out: What makes a small business tick? What issues do they face, and why do entrepreneurs choose to launch in Guernsey?
Today, we catch up with Ellie Schreibke...
After finishing school, I began studying for an Interior Design degree which I am still working on today. At the end of 2023 I was offered the opportunity to take on the ownership of Maison Demain. Although this was unexpected I just couldn’t say no!
We offer a range of homeware, jewellery and gifting items. As a compliment to our existing offering, we are beginning to stock a variety of relaxed clothing options.
Although the business was first established in 2020, I became owner in 2024. The business was established to fill a need of Guernsey customers to feel and interact with products – especially the homeware items – before purchasing. This is something you obviously cannot experience online.
Being new to the role I find many things both challenging and exciting. If I had to pick, I would say my favourite would be interacting with and hearing positive feedback from customers about the new social media strategy and their love of the new stock.
The most challenging part has been ensuring stock levels are appropriate especially when we feature popular items.
I believe our ability to identify customers’ needs and responding to feedback. We go above and beyond to fulfil requests with a quick and efficient turnaround.
I would love for the business to develop a home styling service which allows customers to be supported in their home design decisions. I am keen to expand into this area upon completion of my degree.
One of my favourite things about working here is the customer base, so establishing a relationship with local customers along with meeting tourists who visit the island.
While I am in the early days of being owner it’s a 24 hour role. But it bring me a lot of satisfaction to see hard work paying off. I am hoping there will be more relaxation in the future!
