A new initiative encouraging young people to show their digital skills is now open for applications.

The 2020 Digital Innovators competition is powered by First Central Group and has been organised by the Digital Greenhouse.

It is looking for teams of up to five post-16 students to build a digital solution for the following problem: 'Guernsey is full of talented people but it is not easy to find suitable people for specific jobs'.

"We're looking for teams of bright young innovators to see if they can use their problem solving skills and technology to help connect the many talented individuals on the island with growing businesses," said Digital Greenhouse Director, Lucy Kirby.

"I hope that the competition will not only test the students' knowledge but help build their digital skills and confidence. It will also be a chance to meet industry professionals firsthand - a key step in making employment and work experience connections.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing how their unique ideas have developed into actual practical solutions. These events often yield some extremely impressive results, which just proves that Guernsey is buzzing with talent."

The competition is part of the Digital Innovators Programme, which is designed to develop young people's digital skills in preparation for a career in the technology and creative sectors.

"It's essential for the local industry that young people have opportunities to improve their technology skills on-island," explained John Davison of First Central Group. "This competition will provide students with an opportunity to learn and test themselves in a different way that they would normally encounter in the classroom."

Teams have until 22 May to submit their solutions, which can be entered in any format.

The solutions will be judged by a panel made up of experts from First Central and the Digital Greenhouse.

A prize giving ceremony will take place on 26 June, where awards for 'Best Technical Solution' and 'Most Innovative' will be presented.

More information on the competition and how to enter is available here.
