Guernsey Arts: What's on

Friday 03 May 2024

And just like that… We’re welcoming in the month of May!

As the flowers blossom and the sun begins to beam, it’s not just the bank holiday weekend we’ve got to look forward to. 2024 marks the 79th anniversary of the Liberation, and we’ve got a fabulous lineup of events to help you celebrate and commemorate the special day.

Liberation Day at Castle Cornet

Still looking for that perfect family-friendly Liberation Day event? Join Guernsey Arts and Guernsey Museums for a fun-filled day of celebration, entertainment and creative activities for all ages!

With free entry from 10am until 5pm, those who attend can reflect on the occupation and liberation of Guernsey in the quiet location of the South Battery, where visitors can take in recorded music of the 1940s as well as local poems, recorded specifically for this occasion.

In addition, special screenings of Occupied will take place throughout the day in the intimate settings of the Ursela bunker. Families can also celebrate with a vibrant line up of music, theatre and dance. This includes performances from the Guernsey History in Action Company (who will transport you back in time with their story about the Guernsey Underground News Service), Natalie Thoumine with songs from the 1940s era, and the 2nd Guernsey Boys Brigade. There will also be a chance to dance about with B Creative Dance, and sing along with The Why Nots and Element 6.

In the Amherst room there will be arts and crafts activities available, including the opportunity to make your own peg doll with artist Penny Dawes, create your own ID card, and decorate your own celebratory flag.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

After enjoying the varied lineup of music on the main stage, and the acoustic stage out front, you can head on into the pub from 8pm to continue the party with a series of live DJ sets.

Oh, and it’s free entry! What are you waiting for?

As you may have heard, the fabulous Guernsey Literary Festival has returned for 2024, giving islanders a chance to expand their knowledge while celebrating the art of storytelling.

Adding a sprinkling of visual arts, local artist Olympia McEwan will likewise be sharing her talent with her 7WOMEN exhibition, now situated within the George Crossan Gallery.

The creativity continues into the weekend, with another 10 talks, 6 family events, 2 workshops, 2 exhibition tours and a church service taking place on Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of May.
