Deputies bemoan decision to not progress Fermain wall rebuild

Wednesday 24 April 2024

The future of the collapsed Fermain wall continues to look bleak, as the rescoping of Fermain works came up during the most recent States debate.

During a statement made by the President of the Committee of Environment and Infrastructure, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez said:

“The States agreed last year, as part of the Funding and investment Plan, that the scope of works at Fermain should be reduced to focus just on redirecting the coastal path, which is necessary to continue to allow safe access by the public. Officers are liaising with landowners to determine the next course of action.”

This statement led to a further question from Deputy Victoria Oliver, who said she has been asking about the future of Fermain wall continuously.

“[Can I confirm]... Is this not being progressed?” she asked.

Deputy de Sausmarez reminded the assembly that Deputy Oliver had in fact been part of the debate on the Funding and Investment Plan where deputies had decided to rescope the works at Fermain.

“The Funding and Investment Plan made it clear that we were to rescope the project. [The rebuild] is a project that couldn’t be justified – it's not a sea defence, it is a Napaoleonic military defence, and therefore we were given the task of ‘cutting our cloth’ according to our means.

“We have refocused to just focus on the cliff path.”

Despite this, Deputy de Sausmarez said the rebuild of the wall is something she would “love to progress” and if “anyone wants to bring a requete, I might sign it”.
