“Spirit of collaboration” between Alderney business and government

Tuesday 07 May 2024

Alderney is working across the board to produce a new economic vision for the island, says the States.

It’s Economic Development Committee and local Chamber of Commerce recently came together to in a joint workshop with officials and politicians to discuss island marketing, housing, and commercial taxation.

It's agreed to make the forum a regular occurrence, with the main action points from the inaugural meeting focusing on the hospitality sector.

Locate Alderney could be set up to attract high net worth individuals and digital entrepreneurs to move and set up in the island, alongside a campaign to market the tax-benign elements of the island.

A focus will also be put on working age families and freeing up empty properties to increase the housing stock.

The States of Guernsey will be consulted to advance the educational offering to support these aspirations.

Radio adverts have already been rolled out in Guernsey to drive interest in holidays, while a qualified gas fitter has been appointed to fill a gap in the hospitality sector.

Andrew Eggleston, President of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “The relationship between the States and the Chamber continues in a pro-active way which is such a positive avenue to continue down.

“It was satisfying to see all points on the agenda being discussed in a manner that showed we are all working together for the prime purpose of bettering our Island. I trust that this was the first of what will become regular meetings between our two bodies whether as an open forum discussion or on a one-to-one basis."

EDC Member Derwent Smithurst, who chaired the meeting, noted the “spirit of cooperation and pledged to work to benefit the island.
